Sometimes I find myself in a slump. Do I like it? Well, no. But instead of wallowing, I'm trying to learn from it. I think I just get so burnt out when my life is set in the same routine for too long. Lately my life has consisted of: working, working out, blogging & studying. Lots of studying. Now if you'll notice, that list doesn't involve much interaction with other people. I think that's when I start getting in these slumps.
I just have the urge to stop everything I'm doing and move away. Go on an adventure. Have no worries. But then I come back to planet Earth and realize that one, that isn't realistic and two, that won't solve my problems.
I'm really striving to break things up a bit. I know that I have to keep on top of my responsibilities (especially studying), but I need to make more of an effort to incorporate the things that bring me joy. I need to make time to have dinner with a friend. I need to take a study break and go outside to get some fresh air. I can't let myself become a slave of my to-do list, because let's be honest...that thing is never ending. I'm trying to focus on the fact that this is just a stage in my life. I have my certified personal trainer exam on March 28, so after that I won't be glued to my textbook & flashcards. That will most definitely be a relief.
I'm also trying to remember that although my very type-A self would love to know each and every detail about my future, that God knows what he is doing and that I have to trust him. I've really been working on trust lately. I've sort of been failing. I've let myself get overwhelmed and unhappy. But now that I've told y'all, I'm hoping it'll hold me accountable to really trust God & enjoy life. And not just say it, but do it. Starting now, I'm going to love my life. Every second of it. If it's not what I want it to be, I'm going to change something. No more letting myself get stuck in these ruts. It's okay to not have everything figured out. It's okay to skip a blog post once in awhile to go to the park and just soak in the sunshine. It's okay to skip a workout occasionally to spend time with someone I care about.
It's all about balance. And enjoying each and every day that is given to us.
So I encourage you: when life seems to be heavy, just remember that without the lows in life you wouldn't appreciate the highs. Focus on the things in your life that make you happy. For instance my happy list:
- Adam (and Buck!)
- Family & friends
- Glitter
- Wine & coffee
- Reading
- Spending time outside
- Trying new work outs
- Redecorating my apartment
and obviously
- Dance parties to Luke Bryan & Ke$ha
This was such a lovely post. I really know what you mean, I have it myself too every now and then. I often "let go of myself" and be sad for a few hours or sometimes I just can't see why I'm studying and stuff like that - than I'm thinking: what's the point? But you're right, you have to enjoy the little things in life, because they'll make you happy!
ReplyDeleteLove this post!

I loved reading this! Choosing joy is a choice and you are wise to put your trust in God and see the good in the "lows" of life. If it helps, I think you are awesome! :)
ReplyDeleteThis was a really great post! I really relate to what you're saying here. And as much as I hate to hear it myself, i think it's just that time in our lives. The 20s are a little hard and a lot confusing! The little things help us find balance and its an important lesson to learn that we'll use for the rest of our lives.

Geez, I needed to hear this. You hit the nail on the head, girlfriend. Thanks for speaking a little comfort into my soul--those words are powerful! You're the best. Loooooove you big time!
ReplyDeleteGirl, I'm the same way. I try my hardest to put my whole trust in God. I am so impatient. I need to get over it! His will, his way! What part of FL do you live in??
ReplyDeleteI'm the same way. When I get overwhelmed I just want to run away! This is a good reminder to step back and take a breath. Good luck with studying for your exam!
ReplyDeleteDear Friend,
ReplyDeleteI honestly feel you are wel beyond your years. Your wisdom, courage, and adventurous self listens to your inner voices and forgets the background noise! I love how you're open about doing whatever your heart desires without feeling like you have to stick to one path in life!
Be happy... be free... and remember it's all about your ATTITUDE that will make or break any situation you may encounter in life.
Love to love you sweet cheeks ;) xo, Bev
I'm so glad you posted this because this is what I needed to read as my week has been pretty bad. I feel like I'm in a hole instead of a slump but its pretty much the same idea.
ReplyDeleteI hope we both get back our groove lol
P.s.
How's potty training going with buck? It's a lot of work for us!
This is soooo true! I always think that to myself... that we shouldn't always keep trying to reach a certain point, but we should concentrate on the now and the moment! Thanks for the reminder! :)

Hey Jessica!
ReplyDeleteI was feeling a lot like this yesterday and found a really appropriate article via Darling Magazine (I had never heard of it until yesterday). It was all about creating a 'To-Don't' List. You can read it here... http://darlingmagazine.org/the-to-dont-list/#comments
I hope you find some peace soon!

I think you are wise to be figuring this out; it took me a few more years than it has taken you. I tend to let work overtake my life to the exclusion of all other things. I finally realized it wasn't work that was making me unhappy, it was the lack of relationship. This year I've made an effort to have dinner or lunch with a friend at least once a week, keep in contact with long distance friends by text, email, or phone, and it has made SUCH a difference in my attitude. I'm so much happier and content in my life.
ReplyDeleteAnd trust, that's my theme this year, and you want to talk about peace??? Focusing on trust, knowing God has got this, it's such freedom!
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your path.
Really enjoy your blog!
