Go Ahead, Raid My Bookshelf

I've love reading ever since I was a little girl. If I let myself, I could spend a week straight in my bed lost within the pages of a book. But if I did that I would probably smell, be really hungry, and be some weirdo with no friends. So I don't let myself get too carried away.

When I do make time to read I tend to be drawn toward series. I think it's because I get semi-depressed when books end. It's been a good little while since I've found a series that's captivated my attention so I decided to go for something a little bit different this time around. A little something I like to call "brain candy." Basically, a book with no real literary value, but instead something that's just fun to read.

I just finished up Girls In White Dresses by Jennifer Close. Such a cute book, y'all. Let me be forward for a second though: this is not a not a book worthy of literary merit by any means. It wasn't the most well written book I've ever read. However, I don't usually laugh out loud too often when I read books, and this one had me spitting my wine out. It's basically about 3 girls who feel like all of their friends are getting married. They are fresh out of college and ready to see what the world has to offer (or what they have to offer the world). Little do they know what's ahead...the real world, dun dun dun.

I thought it was funny how I could relate to some of the things that the girls were going through. A lot of people I know are getting engaged (and some even having babies...wow, I cannot imagine that at all in my life right now), and that's a lot of what this book is about. Plus, I thought (for some ungodly reason) that I would finish college and BOOM be magically working my dream job. Here I am almost a year later without a clue as to what that dream job is. I also connected with the sarcastic attitudes that the girls had...those were the parts that had me laughing the most.

This wasn't a book that I would rush home to stick my nose in. But when I did make time to read it (like when I was taking a bubble bath or laying by the pool), it held my interest. If that makes sense. If you're looking for a quick & fun read then I would say give this book a shot. I will warn you that it doesn't have a specific plot...it kind of bounces around, describing different things that the girls went through throughout their 20s. I think the author did a good job of tying the stories together and giving the reader a sense of who each girl is, though.

Have you read it? What did you think? I just started reading The Night Circus, so that's next on the Raid My Bookshelf list.

  1. I haven't read that book yet but it's now on the top of my list! It keeps getting "pinned" by my friends on Pinterest and now that you've done this summary I think I'll definitely go out and pick up a copy!

  3. I'm in the middle of the "Outlander" series by Diana Gabaldon and it is SO GOOD. It's about a post-WW2 nurse who steps through a stone henge and ends up in 18th century Scotland. Each book is two inches thick, and there are seven of them, so it'll hold off that end of series-induced depression for a good long while.

Also, if you're looking for hilarious, check out Christopher Moore. I own all of his stuff and he is cramp-in-your-side funny

  4. Oh man I love reading so much too! And I like this blog series you're starting - because I always love to hear what other people are reading. I keep a list on my iPhone anytime I see something like this post, or someone gives me a suggestion! And "Night Circus" is on that list actually, so I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of it!

  5. Your bookshelf -- love it! Safe Haven was one of my favorite Nicholas Sparks books and I love Emily Giffin! I haven't got to Where We Belong yet, but I've heard nothing but good things about it.

If you like "brain candy" I recommend any of Lauren Conrad's books! I love LC to death, but her writing definitely qualifies as brain candy. They're fun to read on a plane or for a day at the pool!

  7. I guess it's January! I have been thinking about talking more about what I'm reading and today in my feed there were TWO posts about what people are reading! :)

It's fun to read books like that every now and then! No real point, just a look into the lives and minds of other "people" as created by an author who was probably inspired by what they have seen and heard and maybe even thought themselves!

Being a 20 somoething has taught me one thing: Life isn't always what we thought it would be...And, that's not always a bad thing!

  12. I liked the Night Circus enough, but it wasn't my favorite book of all time. My favorite part about it was our circus themed book club!

  14. I was scoping that one out at Target a couple weeks ago and wondering just how much of a "brain candy" book it really is...good to know.

The Night Circus! Oh my gosh I have heard awesome things about this book and I just found it at the thrift for like two bucks! ....Yes, please do let us know how you like it because I have a couple books in line to be read first!

  15. I agree! The jumping around was a bit distracting but overall a book that I made a ton of connections with!

Side note: You sure you didn't take pic of my bookshelf? Pretty sure you can find 90% of those books on there!

  16. And I hit post before I finished...if you're looking for a good brain candy series, check the Three Girls series by Rachel Schurig. Fun to read and great characters that are in their 20s as well!

  17. I love these posts! I like finding new stuff to read! I am definitely checking out this book!

Have you read the Beautiful Creatures series yet? If you're a fan of a series and the fantasy/paranormal genre (like Twilight) I would recommend it! They're being made into movies and the first one comes out on Valentine's Day! I just started reading the books and its good so far!
