Thankfully, I was wrong. This movie was incredible. Logan Lerman & Emma Watson did a phenomenal job. I've never seen Emma do anything outside of her Hermione role, so it was a nice change of pace. She was the perfect actress to play Sam. This is the first time that I've ever heard of (or seen) Logan and he was fantastic. I really feel like the actors mirrored the characters in the book so snaps for that (oh, hey sorority days...who says snaps?).
The plot deals with a freshman boy, Charlie, who is very introverted and has dealt with a lot emotionally. He is taken in by two seniors who introduce him to the "real world" of high school. The situations and relationships are so relatable, which is why this story is such a good one.
After watching the movie, I felt good inside. Those are my favorite kind of movies. Ones that impact me. Make me want to be better. Make me want to take advantage of every day. Make me want to take risks. To love harder. To laugh more.

I would definitely recommend watching this movie. And reading the book. Here are some of my favorite quotes from The Perks of Being a Wallflower:
Charlie: "I can see it. This one moment when you know you're not a sad story. You are alive and you stand up and see the lights on the buildings and everything that makes you wonder. And you're listening to that song on that drive with the people you love most in this world. And in this moment, I swear, we are infinite."
Mr. Anderson: "We accept the love we think we deserve."
Charlie: "So, I guess we are who are are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we'll never know most of them. But even if we don't have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there. We can still do things. And we can try to feel okay about them."
After Adam & I finished the movie he said, "So I have one question. What exactly are the perks of being a wallflower?" I thought for a minute. I think the biggest perk of being a wallflower is the fact that you observe and take in everything around you. You appreciate people and things for what they are. You don't judge and you love freely.
I'd give this movie 4.5/5 stars.
Awe, I loved this review! I haven't read the book or seen the movie, but I love Emma Watson and Mae Whitman, so I've wanted to. You described exactly the type of movies I watching as well; ones that make me feel good inside and inspired to go be a better person and get off my butt and DO things. Love it. And P.S. I love your blog and I think you're fantastic! Haha :D -- Bri

I just watched it this weekend on a bus back home from NYC. I really enjoyed it! I hadn't read the book, but I'm glad to know that the movie did a good job of recreating it. I also loved all of the castings for the characters! :)
ReplyDeleteI watched this movie a few weeks ago, and I have to say your review is spot on with how I felt about it! I find it cathartic to cry while watching movies, and this one made me shed a few tears! It definitely left me feeling all fuzzy inside at the end :)
ReplyDeleteP.S. Good luck on your upcoming CPT exam!

Never seen or heard of this movie, but after reading your synopsis, it almost sounds similar to 16 Candles (80's CLASSIC!). I heart Emma Watson, so I gotta peep this movie out!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing goooorl! xo, Bev
Love love LOVE. This is exactly how I felt about the movie. It's definitely one of the best movies made from a book. Even though I was in high school when I feel like this book became hugely popular (I could def be wrong about that though), I was really late to the scene reading it (just two years ago). This is definitely a movie and book that everyone should have in their lives!

Loved both the book and the movie! I was nervous about the movie, like you, but was so pleased!
ReplyDeleteMy roommate gave this book to me freshman year for Christmas, and I loved it - I think I finished it in a day!
ReplyDeleteAnd I completely agree that the movie was also fantastic! I know that Chbosky wrote the screen play, so I guess that had something to do with it.
You picked out some great quotes - the first one you listed is my favorite :)
